New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday took note of serious allegations of financial irregularities in the procurement of military hardware by the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO) and issued notices to the union government. NTRO is a government agency which provides technical assitance in intelligence matters and functions under the National Security Advisor.
The public interest litigation was initiated by V. K. Mittal, a former seniro NTRO official A bench led by Justice R. V. Raveendran dismissed a report from a one-man committee and asked for a more detailed report. The court also observed that it might have to monitor the investigation, given the nature of allegations which point to systemic corruption in the procurement of surveillance equipment.
The Delhi high court had previously disposed of this PIL and Mittal is appealing against the high court’s order.
