New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said it is time for the world to unite against terrorism to protect humanity.

Modi, who was speaking at a Ramlila event in Lucknow, said countries that support terrorists should also be punished. “Terrorism is against humanity. The world has to unite against terrorism. Countries that support terrorism cannot be spared. People should also be alert against terror and not allow terrorists to succeed," Modi said at the Aishbagh ground in Lucknow on Tuesday.

Modi said there were many social evils prevalent in society and people should ensure corruption, caste differences, class differences and religious intolerance are eliminated.

This is the first time after becoming Prime Minister that Modi celebrated Dussehra in Uttar Pradesh, which goes to polls in early 2017. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 71 of 80 Lok Sabha seats in the 2014 national elections and is hoping to win the state elections.

The BJP has been out of power in Uttar Pradesh since 2002 when Rajnath Singh, the current home minister, was chief minister. A victory in Uttar Pradesh is necessary for Modi to maintain BJP’s stronghold over north India.

This was Modi’s third Dussehra celebrations as PM. In the 2015 Dussehra celebrations, Modi was in Andhra Pradesh while in 2014 he celebrated it in New Delhi and shared the dais with former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.

BJP will not form an alliance with any regional party for the Uttar Pradesh elections, party members said. It had an alliance with Apna Dal in the 2014 general election.

A large section in BJP also says there should be a chief ministerial candidate in UP and the assembly elections should be contested under Modi’s leadership and the party should highlight the work done by the National Democratic Alliance government at the centre.
