The first meeting of the Indian National Congress (INC) was held in Mumbai on 28 December 1885. On Monday, the ruling party began a year of celebrations to mark its 125th anniversary.

The political history of modern India is intimately linked to the history of the Congress party, which began as a courteous lobby of educated Indians but was then refashioned as a popular party of agitation by Mahatma Gandhi and later became India’s dominant party of government under Jawaharlal Nehru and his successors. From the Quit India movement to Independence to socialism to the Emergency to economic reforms, the Congress has been in the midst of it all.
