Melting of ice at the North and the South Pole, rising carbon emissions and rapid climate change have pushed environment issues to the forefront off late. In India, too, there is a growing awareness of environment issues as being strategic to business growth and the sustainability of society as a whole. Recent climactic disasters like the Sunami prove that we need to take immediate action to restore the fragile ecological balance. The Indian government has also made a set of Acts and rule to prevent more damage to the environment.

The EPA (Environment Protection Act), 1986 came into force soon after the Bhopal Gas Tragedy and is considered an “umbrella" legislation. It fills many gaps in the existing environmental laws. There have been other laws like the 1989 Handling and Management of Hazardous Waste Rules that have been legislated even after the landmark 1986 Act though.

However, all rules exist mostly in spirit than in execution. It is our right as citizens of India to demand their implementation. We bring you a list of such rules such that you can demand the same.
