Supreme Court refuses to hear Srinivasan’s plea

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday turned down a plea by the sidelined Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president N. Srinivasan to modify a 28 March order that sought to remove him from office.

Srinivasan requested that he be reinstated as president of India’s cricketing authority for all activities other than the Indian Premier League (IPL).

A two-judge bench of B.S. Chauhan and A.K. Sikri told Srinivasan to approach the bench of justices A.K. Patnaik and Fakkir Mohamed Ibrahim Kalifulla that had passed the order. “They (the orders) were not ex-parte orders and they were passed in your presence," the judges said. “We are not here to modify the orders passed by another bench."

Srinivasan had said the order to remove him from office caused him “tremendous loss of goodwill". Another order on 16 May extended the duration of his removal till at least September, which Srinivasan contended in his application will be beyond his term as BCCI president and affects his “career prospects" negatively.

The apex court had earlier appointed a committee led by former judge Mukul Mudgal to investigate allegations of spot-fixing and betting in the sixth season of the popular Twenty20 cricket tournament.

The Mudgal committee and newly appointed investigation team chief B.B. Mishra, who is also deputy director general of the Narcotics Control Bureau, have been directed to continue investigations. A previous Mudgal committee report said Srinivasan’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan may have been guilty of betting, and censured the cosy relationship between team owners and their players.

Meanwhile, interim president of BCCI-IPL Sunil Gavaskar on Thursday admitted that two cricketers were approached by the bookies and the matter has been reported to anti-corruption and security unit (ACSU) officials .

Asked if players have been approached during this year’s IPL, Gavaskar replied, “There have been a couple and it’s been reported to ACSU. They are looking into it."
