Mosquito menace: Special train to spray insecticides in NCR region along tracks

New Delhi: A special train, Terminator on Wheels, is set to deal with the mosquito menace in Delhi-NCR by spraying insecticides along the railway tracks.

South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) along with Northern Railways is going to run a special “mosquito killer" train from 23 September. The train will have a truck-mounted power sprayer that will spray insecticides to prevent mosquito breeding in water bodies near railway tracks.

As per the schedule prepared by the Railways and SDMC, the spraying will happen in four rounds of two days each in the months of September and October: 23-24 September, 26-27 September, 7- 8 October and 14-15 October.

There will be a maximum of two weeks’ interval between two rounds depending upon the availability of tracks. The train is expected to cover approximately 150 km per round and will pass through 12 major areas. These include Delhi Sarai Rohilla, Patel Nagar, Delhi Cantt, Palam, Safdarjung, Kishanganj, Lajpat Nagar, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Adarsh Nagar, Rathdhana, Shahdara and Gurgaon.

“The idea has been adopted because normally it is very difficult to take around a wagon loaded with a truck on or near the tracks as Delhi is so busy that even passenger trains have to wait many times," said Northern Railways spokesperson Neeraj Verma. He added that this attempt is being worked out for over many years now, especially during the periods when diseases like malaria, filaria, dengue, chikungunya and Japanese encephalitis are at their peak.

Notably, cases of dengue and chikungunya have reached 2,625 and 1,378, respectively, in the national capital and the state government has been pro-active in tackling the menace with measures like fogging. The trains will sanitize areas within 50-60 km range from the tracks.

A SDMC official, on the condition of anonymity, said colonies and slums near the railway tracks are prone to water-borne diseases because of lack of hygiene.
