Heat wave programmes to be launched in Nagpur, Bhubaneswar next week
The programme is aimed at minimizing deaths during summer heat waves in vulnerable cities
New Delhi: In a bid to minimize deaths during heat waves in the summer, India will be launching regional Heat Action Plans in Nagpur and Bhubaneswar in the coming week.
The regional heat action plans were jointly formulated by national and state leaders, public health organisations, meteorological officials, international experts and the Natural Resources Defence Council (NRDC).
This comes after more than 2,000 people were killed due to heat waves at the end of May last year. These heat action plans aim to reduce harm from heat waves by initiating an early warning system for residents, providing preparation and training to medical and community workers, setting up cooling centres, building public awareness of heat-related health risks, and coordinating inter-agency emergency response efforts.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), India has seen 12 of its 15 warmest years since 2001 and the past decade was the warmest on record.
