Chandigarh: The Haryana government has launched a 340-crore scheme which envisages providing private water connections in 30 lakh households in rural and urban areas.

Commissioner PWD (Water Supply and Sanitation) Dalip Singh told participants at a workshop on Water Quality Monitoring and Surveilance here on 12 April that previously drinking water supply in rural areas was being made available mainly through public stand posts which resulted in gross wastage and contamination of water.

Now, the thrust was to provide private connections, he said.

Under the private water connection scheme, out of the 30 lakh household connections, water connections in 8 lakh scheduled caste households would be provided free of cost.

To avoid contamination of water due to rusting of G I Pipes, the composite pipes, which are weather proof, would be used for the connections. This would go a long way in reducing contamination and wastage of water, he added.
