New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to hear a plea seeking preventive checks for viral disease chikungunya in Delhi.

The public interest litigation filed by a doctor, Anil Mittal, claimed that many people were falling ill because municipal authorities had converted Delhi into a dumping ground.

A bench headed by justice Anil R. Dave said the matter will be considered and heard on 30 September.

Supreme court judge justice D.Y. Chandrachud was diagnosed with the viral disease last week.

Meanwhile, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) formed a committee Wednesday to tackle the disease, including the chief secretary of Delhi, commissioners of corporations, vice chairman of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) and director general of health services of the Delhi government.

The tribunal also directed formation of district level committees to prevent spread of the disease.

At least 15 people have died due to complications related to chikungunya and 18 have succumbed to dengue this season. Over 1,700 cases of chikungunya have been reported in the national capital while dengue has affected more than 1,100 people, Mint reported.

Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes. Its symptoms include fever, joint pain, muscle pain, nausea, fatigue and rash.
