New Delhi: Two police personnel and a civilian were killed and six security personnel injured in an ambush by left wing extremists in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district on Sunday.

“Naxals ambushed troops of district reserve guard (DRG) and special task force (STF). Six Chhattisgarh police personnel have been injured and airlifted from Bhejji in Sukma to Raipur for treatment. Two police personnel have been martyred. Firing went on from 11am on Sunday to 4pm and teams of 202 Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) reached the location for assistance," said a senior state police official, requesting anonymity.

In another encounter near Errabore village in Sukma, one left wing extremist was gunned down by the police.

According to intelligence reports reviewed by Mint, Maoists are now expanding their base beyond their usual bastion of Chhattisgarh’s Bastar district to the tri-junction of Madhya Pradesh-Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh (MMC) in order to support their existing strongholds in Sukma and Dantewada districts in Chhattisgarh.

“The planning of Maoists is to build a new battlefield in the MMC tri-junction area with an aim to create a new guerilla zone. They discussed the need to expand their battle zone towards the north and then the east to create a corridor with their old battle zones of Odisha and Jharkhand," the intelligence report states.

With the Union home ministry recording 373 Maoist attacks in 2017 in Chhattisgarh, the intelligence report warned of heightened and more stealth attacks in the summer of 2018.
