New Delhi: Construction firm Gammon India Ltd, which was building the section of the Delhi Metro that collapsed on 12 July killing six people, will be issued a show-cause notice asking why it shouldn’t be blacklisted from Metro works for two years, Union urban development minister Jaipal Reddy said in Parliament on Tuesday.
Delhi Metro Rail Corp. Ltd (DMRC) decided to issue the notice after an expert panel constituted to investigate the accident found several deficiencies, Reddy said. The panel found serious deficiencies in the design of the cantilever; it also found the concrete used was not strong enough “probably due to lack of adequate curing". DMRC also decided to blacklist design consultants Arch Consultancy Services for five years and structural consultant Tandon Construction for two years.
In an unsigned emailed statement, Gammon India said it was yet to receive the report of the expert committee and the show-cause notice. “On receipt we shall study the observations of the committee and suitably respond to the show-cause notice," the statement said. The firm’s shares were up 2.64% to close at Rs111 each at the close of trading on Tuesday.
DMRC also suspended V. P. Srivastava and Mukesh Thakur, two deputy chief engineers directly responsible for the designs and site supervision, and took action against Rajan Kataria, chief engineer (design) of the project, and Vijay Anand, DMRC director in whose jurisdiction the accidents took place.
