New Delhi: A day after the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government secured the trust vote in Parliament, CPI(M) expelled its veteran leader and Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee from the party.
Chatterjee has been accused of violating party discipline by not resigning from his post of Speaker despite a party directive to do so.
“Somnath Chatterjee has violated party discipline”, party politburo member Biman Bose said.
“We (Communists) have to abide by party rules. The party will severe all connections with those who do not follow party dictates. We cannot keep him as Speaker,” he noted.
Asked what action Chatterjee might face for violating party discipline, Bose said: “Clause number 19 in the party constitution has clearly spelt the provisions in this regard.”
However, experts suggest that he can still legally continue as the Speaker.
