Sandeep Sharma and Nagesh Sayam look like regular office goers in Mumbai. What sets them apart is that they’ve returned from a mission in Antarctica.
Sharma and Sayam work for China Lights and Power. They were part of a 5-member team that headed out to the frozen continent to repair the renewable energy gear at a base used by an NGO called 2041.
Once there, the two men got down to fixing the wind turbine and two solar panels at the 2041 base. But they faced unique challenges. Sayam recalls an incident when he was trying to figure out how to fix a fuse. With no replacement parts handy, Sayam made do with a piece of aluminum foil from a medicine tablet.
Despite the hurdles, both Sharma and Sayam say their experience gave them a new appreciation of nature and the impact humans have on it. And both say they will not hesitate to take up an offer to return.
