Puducherry: The Puducherry administration is keen to develop the Union Territory as an ideal tourist site, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said.
Declaring open a Rs.25 crore truck terminal at Mettupalayam near here on 25 June, Rangasamy said the terminal had been created to ensure that all heavy vehicles bringing goods into Puducherry or taking the consignments from here did not ply or operate in the town limits.
Accidents had been occurring quite often in the town limits and school going children and pedestrians were among those who were facing the difficulty.Hence the government acquired a 37-acre site at Mettupalayam and created the facility. Around 500 lorries could be parked in the terminal and no heavy vehicles would be allowed to ply in the town limits hereafter.
The purpose was to ease traffic congestion and to ensure that Puducherry was free from traffic snarls and pollution free, he said.
The Chairman of Oulgaret municipality N.S.J. Jayabal, who presided, said the terminal was set up by the municipality in collaboration with town and country planning department.
T.M. Balakrishnan, secretary to Local Administration department and Director of the department E. Vallavan also spoke. Commissioner T. Diagarajan referred to the special features of the terminal.
