Hyderabad: The Telangana government on Thursday sought help of National Disaster Management Relief (NDRF) for rescue and relief operations in Hyderabad as the city was battered by heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours due to active south-west monsoon.

Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana, is the worst hit as normal life was disrupted due to heavy rains. The city has witnessed about 164 millimetres (mm) of rainfall during the last 24 hours resulting in several localities getting inundated.

The city experienced heavy rains on Thursday as well.

Inflows in some tanks, including Hussain Sagar Lake, have reached to the brim, inundating several localities.

The drainage system of the city breached at several places leading to flooding. The city with a drainage system to handle up to 200 million litres water a day received double that capacity of water, government said.

The city’s road network was extensively damaged leading to hours of traffic jams.

Telangana chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao reviewed the situation and gave directions to officials to take all precautionary measures in view of the heavy rain forecast for the next 48 hours.

His son K. Taraka Rama Rao, minister for IT, industries and municipal administration, on Thursday visited several residential areas inundated due to rains in Hyderabad and assured that the government would take all necessary steps to prevent recurrence of a similar situation.

He said repairing roads, dismantling dilapidated structures and prevention of spread of communicable diseases are on.

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in its mid-day bulletin warned of further heavy to very heavy rains as south-west monsoon is vigorous over Telangana along with Konkan region of Maharashtra and Goa.

Telangana received 120% excess normal rainfall so far in September. The rainfall in September stood at 217.2 millimetre (mm) and for the current year it was around 767.2 mm. Telangana’s normal annual rainfall is 905 mm.

South-west rainfall brought cheer to farmer of south Telangana, which is reeling under severe drought situation till August.

Telangana received 42% deficit rainfall in August, and was staring at a third consecutive year of drought, and farmers were losing hope on Kharif or summer crop.

Telangana for 2015-16 received 592 mm of rainfall, which is much below its normal forecast.

Majority of the farmers in Telangana depend on monsoon for agriculture.

“I am buying water tankers to save the standing crop, as two of the borewells in my field have failed this summer, the rains have saved the crop," said V. Damodar Reddy, a farmer from Chevella, of Ranga Reddy district.

Reddy cultivates corn on his five-acre land.
