Air India unions vow full cooperation on 18 August

Mumbai: A section of Air India employees on Sunday said that they would extend all possible cooperation on 18 August, when private airlines will go on strike, to manage extra passenger load and ensure smooth functioning of services.

“We will extend all possible cooperation by working round the clock to ensure that adequate flights are pressed into services on August 18 for the benefit of our valued passengers," Aviation Industry Employees Guild (AIEG) general secretary, George Abraham and Air Corporation Employees Union (ACEU) president, Dinkar Shetty said in a joint statement.

“We will ensure 100% ‘On Time performance´ and ‘impeccable´ service on the ground and in the air," they said.

Six private carriers, under the aegis of industry body Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA), announced their decision to not fly on 18 August, protesting rising prices of aviation turbine fuel and taxes, besides high airport charges.

They demanded an immediate bailout and threatened to suspend services indefinitely if the government did not intervene urgently.

“We demand that the government come up with an iron hand on these private airlines and have their operating licences suspended forthwith," the unions said.

AIEG and ACEU are among the 14 employee unions operating under the National Aviation Company of India (NACIL), which runs Air India.
