New Delhi: The ability of a company to attract young people to work for it may well depend on its location, said a new survey released Thursday.

The survey, India’s new world of work—conducted by global research firm Synovate for staffing services company TeamLease Services Pvt. Ltd—showed that convenience of commuting, career opportunities and work profile are key factors that influence where people below 25 years of age choose to work. And stress and work-life imbalance are the main factors that influence them to quit jobs.

At least 90% of young employees polled in seven of the eight cities where the survey was conducted picked career opportunities as the most important factor in choosing a company. The only exception is Ahmedabad, where 66% picked this.

Synovate polled 444 employees in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune, and 52 human resources (HR) managers in Bangalore, Chennai, New Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai.

“The survey captures some of the implications of India’s young workforce and their changing view of employment," said Surabhi Mathur, general manager for permanent staffing at TeamLease. “Today’s youth has higher aspirations, is more impatient, has more choices and does not view employment as a relationship but as a transaction."

Explaining the reason behind younger employees’ concern for growth opportunities, Praneet Mehrish, director of human resources at semiconductor firm ST Microelectronics Pvt. Ltd, said: “The younger generation is a lot more informed and concerned about career growth prospects, especially because compensation and other factors—including good work environment—are a given for today’s employees."

Among the HR managers polled, 36% in Mumbai and 18% in Bangalore did not cite career options as the main criteria influencing young workers’ choice.

After career options, job profile is the next most important factor, with at least 80% of employees and HR professionals picking this.

Pay packets continue to be one of the biggest reasons young workers to stay longer in a company. At least 85% of young people polled said compensation and financial benefits influence their decision to remain with an employer.

Most HR managers polled, except in Bangalore and Mumbai, agreed that compensation is one of the most effective retention tools.

Last year, Gurgaon-based knowledge process outsourcing company Evalueserve.com Pvt. Ltd set up a facility in Noida, a satellite city of New Delhi, after discovering that a number of its employees living in and around Noida, especially married women, quit because of long commutes.

“The Noida office has been aimed at reducing travel time for employees living in this zone of the NCR (national capital region) and improving their work-life balance," said Alok Aggarwal, chairman and co-founder of Evalueserve. “A few of our employees who had left because of long travel hours are back with us."
