Jayalalithaa updates: Apollo Hospital says CM ‘very critical’

Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday. Here are the latest updates on the her health status

Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday, almost two months after she was hospitalized on account of “dehydration and fever".

The Apollo Hospital, where the chief minister has been admitted since 22 September, early on Monday morning released an update on Jayalalithaa’s health, saying she has been put on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a heart assist device, and is under observation.

Several leaders and officials have visited Jayalalithaa since Sunday evening, including governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) leaders.

Here are the latest updates on the health status of Jayalalithaa and the accompanying concerns over law and order in Tamil Nadu:

• Apollo Hospital says Jayalalithaa remains very critical and is still on ECMO, reports news agency ANI.

Jayalalithaa is ‘out of danger, but needs ICU care’, claimed Union health minister J.P. Nadda, reports India Today.

A team of doctors has been sent from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi to Chennai to help in the treatment of Jayalalithaa.

Union minister Venkaiah Naidu will go to Chennai to visit Jayalalithaa, reports ANI.

State ministers including P. Thangamani arrive at the hospital.

Governor Rao visits Jayalalithaa at the Apollo Hospital.

Tamil Nadu DGP asks policemen to remain on duty ‘until further orders’.

Union minister Pon Radhakrishnan arrives in Chennai to visit Jayalalithaa.

Senior leaders including President Pranab Mukherjee, DMK chief M. Karunanidhi and Rahul Gandhi, among others express concern over Jayalalithaa’s health status.
