New Delhi: The Law Commission on Friday sought public opinion on the issue of a uniform civil code.

In an appeal from the panel’s chairperson B.S. Chauhan, the commission asked stakeholders to engage with it for a complete “revision and reform" of family laws.

For this purpose, the commission also annexed a 16-point questionnaire which stakeholders can answer.

Chauhan’s appeal mentioned that family law reform has to see “women’s rights as an end in itself rather than a matter of constitutional provisions, religious rights and political debate alone".

The panel sought opinions on how family law reforms can be brought without compromising the “diversity and the plurality that constitutes the core of India’s social fabric".

The commission’s public engagement comes in light of a reference made by the government in July to file a detailed report on issues related to the uniform civil code, which was one of the electoral promises of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

A uniform civil code was conceptualized under Article 44 of the Constitution as a directive principle. Directive principles are guidelines provided in the Constitution that are “fundamental to the governance of the country".
