Mayawati seeks special aid for Uttar Pradesh

New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati has demanded a special financial package of Rs80,000 crore (800 billion) from the Central government for her state to remove “regional” imbalances, a press statement from her Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) said. BSP MPs conveyed the demand during a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday. The MPs also told the Prime Minister that an earlier package of Rs3,506 crore for drought relief package sanctioned for the Bundelkhand region was too little, the statement said. The delegation also demanded that the Central government allocate six bridge the gap between power demand and supplies.The shortage of coal was hampering the production capacity of existing power plants, the statement said.
