IITs may have quota in senior faculty positions
New Delhi: The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), which opposed the government’s move to introduce caste-based reservations in all senior faculty positions last year, may still have to do so.
Under pressure from several political parties who favour quotas for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes in government jobs, parliamentary affairs minister Vayalar Ravi said in Parliament on Thursday, “Clause 4 (I), (II),(III) and (IV), clauses 4 (2), 4 (3) and the schedule will be removed."
These are the clauses in The Reservation for SC/ST (Posts and Services) Bill 2008, that exempt 47 institutions of national importance and the Indian Institutes of Management from implementing quotas for SC/STs in posts higher than lecturer’s positions. The Bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha in December last year and is yet to tabled in the Lok Sabha.
