Jayalalithaa announces 10,000 flats, residential township
The flats will be built in Chennai and other towns in Tamil Nadu, for Rs825 crore, under the slum-free cities plan
Chennai: Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa on Tuesday announced the construction of 10,000 flats in Chennai and other towns in the state at a cost of ₹ 825 crore, besides the development of a satellite township at Kadambur near Chennai.
“To fulfil Vision 2023 Plan and under the slum-free cities plan of the Union and state governments, the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board, will build 10,000 flats in Chennai and other towns at a cost of ₹ 825 crore during the first phase," Jayalalithaa said in a suo motu statement in the Legislative Assembly.
While the Centre would contribute to 50% of the cost, the state would bear 40% and beneficiaries would pitch in with 10% in the construction expenditure alone.
Jayalalithaa had ordered the reconstruction of 534 TNSCB (Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board) tenements at Nochikuppam in Chennai at a cost of ₹ 48.06 crore, she told the House.
“I am happy to announce that 222 acres of land in Kadambur village will be developed into a self-supporting residential township with all infrastructure facilities," she said. The township has been planned considering the growing need for housing plots in areas around Maraimalai Nagar, she added.
The chief minister also announced a new building to house the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) at Koyambedu.
The new structure, with three basement floors, a stilt floor and eight floors, will also house other government offices and will cost ₹ 63.25 crore.
Pedestrian subways at seven locations, including Alandur, costing ₹ 23 crore, and a two floor office complex above the Velachery MRTS (Mass Rapid Transit System_ station costing ₹ 40 crore, were also announced.
