BJP asks poll panel to initiate action against Rahul Gandhi
A delegation of BJP leaders submits a six-page complaint to the Election Commission against Rahul Gandhi
New Delhi: The main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday asked the Election Commission to initiate action against Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi for “polarizing and divisive speeches" in election rallies in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan earlier this month.
A delegation of BJP leaders, including vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, met the poll panel on Monday morning and submitted a six-page complaint against Rahul Gandhi.
“The Congress vice-president in his speeches was trying to spread communal division and polarize the electorate. He has made certain statements and no one from the government has denied it also. So the Election Commission should take action against Rahul Gandhi and the Congress for violating the model code of conduct," Naqvi told reporters after the meeting.
The party complained that Gandhi had accused the BJP of stoking communal riots in Muzaffarnagar while addressing rallies in Churu and Kherli in Rajasthan on 23 October. The BJP has also taken exception to Gandhi’s remarks on Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) spy agency being in touch with young people in communal violence-hit Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh. The BJP has asked him to either name the Muslim youth or apologize for his statement.
The Election Commission announced state polls in Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram on 4 October and the code of conduct has been effective since then.
