Rahul Gandhi seeking Lucknow route to Delhi?
New Delhi: Congress party general secretary Rahul Gandhi launched his party’s campaign for crucial elections in Uttar Pradesh early next year by signalling that he may be ready to take on a more prominent role than hitherto.
“Kabhi kabhi mujhe lagta hai ki Lucknow aaoon aur aap ki ladai khud ladun (I sometimes feel I should go to Lucknow to fight for you myself)," he said on Monday.
By showing that he may be willing to become chief minister, Gandhi has also raised the political stakes for himself in a state where the Congress party is running third and is regarded as having little chance of winning the polls.
Gandhi chose Phulpur -- the constituency of Jawaharlal Nehru, his great grandfather and India’s first Prime Minister -- to launch the party’s campaign. He has been critical of the state’s Mayawati-led government over corruption and law and order.
