Alarmed at the number of people dying every year due to road accidents in Himachal Pradesh, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI (M) in the state has demanded that road safety be made a poll issue, The Hill Post reports. Looking at how Arvind Kejriwal’s anti-corruption stand allowed the Aam Aadmi Party to emerge as a national party, the CPI (M) may have finally found the one issue that could lead to the resurgence of the Left parties at least in the hill state.

The half-a-century-old Left parties are facing their biggest challenge in the ongoing election: the threat of becoming irrelevant, The Business Standard points out. The paper says the Left needs new leadership and a new direction if it is to remain relevant.

Author Pankaj Mishra writes in Mint that the ongoing polls, the largest in history, are important as many of the 800 million voters have moved away from voting along sectarian lines and are likely to vote for or against economic positions.

It looks like Narendra Modi will have a difficult time getting allies together once the results come in. Now even the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief J. Jayalalithaa has fired her first barb in the campaign trail against Modi, essentially painting the BJP and the Congress with the same brush on the issue of inter-state Cauvery water sharing, the Daily Bhaskar reported.

The campaign trail could easily be one of the most strenuous exercise politicians must get through, more so when it is the general election, and even more for a prime ministerial candidate. Deccan Herald spoke to doctors seeking advice for politicians travelling thousands of kilometres every day on the trail.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has taken a back seat. He has so far addressed just four rallies as compared to the dozens by Sonia Gandhi, among others. His absence has forced the Congress party president to insist he hit the road more often, The Economic Times reported.

Sharad Pawar is not happy with the Election Commission’s (EC) control over the flow of money during the election. Despite the huge haul of black money that the EC has recently seized, the Nationalist Congress Party chief says that the stringent controls are causing havoc to normal business, NDTV reports.
