Corruption in judiciary hampers economy: study
Corruption in the judiciary undermines economic growth by damaging the trust of the investment community, and impedes efforts to reduce poverty.
Transparency International, a global non-governmental organization, reached this conclusion in its Glo-bal Corruption Report 2007: Corruption in JudicialSystems.
According to the report, released Thursday, India figures among 20 of the 32 countries surveyed where more than three in 10 households reported they had to pay a bribe for securing access to justice or a ‘fair’ outcome in court.
The primary causes for corruption, as per the report, are delays in the disposal of cases, shortage of judges and complex procedures.
The study proposes solutions as well, including a manifold increase in the number of judges with a countrywide recruitment, enhanced judicial accountability, adoption of a code of conduct for judges, infusion of funds for infrastructure and better management of court records.
