Scotland match brings Boult down to earth after IPL windfall

Dunedin: Trent Boult made easy money on Monday, but had to work harder for his match fee on Tuesday as New Zealand edged Scotland at the Cricket World Cup.

Boult found himself $800,000 richer in a few seconds on Monday when he was the fourth highest-priced player purchased in the annual auction for the Indian Premier League (IPL).

He had little time to come to terms with his sudden wealth before taking the field against rank underdog Scotland, which had never won a World Cup match.

Boult took two wickets in his first over as the Black Caps quickly reduced the visitors to a humbling 12-4. He finished with an economical 2-21 off six overs to help dismiss the Scots for just 142.

A one-sided victory loomed, but New Zealand lost seven wickets in chasing down the modest total, providing some nervous moments for the fans at University Oval, not to mention Boult, who was the next man in when the winning runs were scored.

“It got a little bit scarier that we would have wanted it to," Boult said. “When I’m rushing around the changing room trying to chuck the pads on it means we might be in a little bit of trouble. But we got there in the end and got the points and got the job done."

Boult joined the ranks of New Zealand’s highest-paid sportsmen with his IPL windfall on Monday but insisted it had no effect on his role with the New Zealand team.

Boult watched the IPL auction online with New Zealand teammates, several of whom were also up for sale.
