New Delhi: England players were the toast of the 2017 Indian Premier League (IPL) players’ auction on Monday with all-rounder Ben stokes becoming the costliest-ever foreign player to play in the T20 league. He was bought at a massive price of Rs14.50 crore by Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) outbidding Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

■ Stokes’ compatriot, left-arm fast bowler Tymal Mills was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for the next highest Rs12 crore price.

■ Although not high as England players, young players from Afghanistan too made a splash with leg-spinner Rashid Khan Arman bought at Rs4 crore from Sunrisers Hyderabad.

■ Among Indian players, Tamil Nadu left-arm seamer T. Natarajan garnered the highest Rs3 crore from Kings XI Punjab.

■ Several other uncapped players such as Rajasthan’s left-arm pacer Aniket Chaudhary, Karnataka’s young off-spinner Krishnappa Gowtham got hefty bids.

■ But, the auction turned out to be an embarrassment for senior Team India Test players like Cheteshwar Pujara and Ishant Sharma who went unsold.
