Reliance Jio has signed Intex as a vendor for its 4G feature phone which will hit the market in August, said a report in The Economic Times. The phone co-developed by Intex for the Indian market, will be priced by Reliance Jio through a subsidy model, added the report.
The ET report cited Nidhi Markanday, director and business head, Intex Technologies, as saying that the handset will also be marketed by the new telco. “We will launch this 4G feature phone in this quarter, but will not be selling it stand alone in the market. We are in dialogue with Reliance Jio for bundling which should be through very soon," Markanday was quoted as saying.
Jio will be sourcing smartphones from multiple vendors and is in talks with device makers in China. Brokerage HSBC has recently said that Jio is likely to price its 4G feature phone at ₹ 500 (less than $8) to lure 2G subscribers to directly switch to 4G, which implies “Jio subsidising each handset by as much as $10-15 ( ₹ 650-975)", added the report.
The order size for the 4G feature phone supporting the VoLTE technology for voice is not yet revealed. “Jio has given us a ballpark figure. Initially we will not be going in a big way as we first want to test the waters, " an unknown Intex executive was quoted as saying.
