Dauble: a social network for art
Currently available on iOS and Android, the Dauble Collector app allows galleries, collectors and art enthusiasts to catalogue their collection, as well as explore new artworks, artists, galleries, museums and events in their area. For instance, if you type “Tasveer” in the Dauble app, you will immediately have access to information about the Bengaluru-based gallery’s 12th season of programming (the exhibitions and publications programming at Tasveer is divided into seasons. Each season contains a series of exhibitions).
The app, which claims to be the first such in the country, currently showcases photographs from two Tasveer exhibitions from the new season: The Palaces Of Memory—Tales From The Indian Coffee House, by award-winning British photographer Stuart Freedman, and Mughal Botanicals, a series of still-life flowers by Dutch photographer Bas Meeuws.
The gallery has partnered with Dauble to create a new level of engagement with collectors and art enthusiasts. This includes photographs from 20 travelling exhibitions that will tour five cities—Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and Chennai, starting this month. These include In the Shadow Of The Raj by Derry Moore, to be shown at the National Institute of Design, Gandhinagar, from 10-22 November, and The Historian’s Eye by William Dalrymple, which has been shot over several years and across geographies. The dates for the latter are yet to be announced.
Collectors who have the Dauble app on their phones can save information (price, technical details, etc) about their favourite photographs from the shows, and refer to these if and when they wish to make a purchase. “Dauble being an art platform ties in tightly to the Tasveer brand in promoting engagement in modern and contemporary works of art, which is also the focus of our current season,” says Abhishek Poddar, the director of Tasveer gallery.
The idea of the app came to Singapore-based entrepreneur and art collector Jai Punj when he was trying to devise ways of managing his own collection. “We found that very few collectors had a record of their collection. Having acquired artworks over many years, documentation seemed to have gotten lost and details had been forgotten. Dauble was created to give collectors a completely private space to catalogue their personal collections, with all the details and documentation in place,” says Ankit Bhangar, product manager.
Though similar apps exist internationally, Dauble’s specific combination of features makes it unique within the country. “Some of these features include the creation of PDF reports of the collection, the facility to move collections between multiple houses/locations and reminders about insurance expiry,” says Bhangar. The app, which has over 2,000 users currently, was conceptualized in 2016 and went live this January.
After Dauble Collector came into the market, the team decided to extend the scope of the platform to galleries and museums, observing that it was hard for a gallery to manage its inventory on Excel sheets. Hence, Dauble Business was introduced, both on the Web and the app, to make management easier; it now features 30-35 galleries/museums based in India.
A significant feature of the app is to help manage events for the galleries. Information regarding the artworks to be displayed or transported to a fair, the vendors involved, artwork costs, etc., has now been digitally compiled and put up on one platform. The app also generates analytics for the gallery on the number of visitors, sales and customer behaviour. While the Dauble app is free for collectors, it offers two packages for galleries, priced at $1,500 (around Rs97,000) and $3,000.
