Lenovo is finally bringing its new mid-range smartphone, the Moto X4, to India. Unveiled at the IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung) Berlin in September 2017, the X4 will be available in India via Flipkart.com and Moto Hub stores from tonight at a starting price of 20,999 (3GB+32GB). The 4GB RAM+ 64GB storage variants costs 2,999.

Flipkart is offering a bevy of launch day offers on the Moto X4. There is an exchange offer worth up to 2,500 on old smartphone, upgrade offer of up to ,000 on old Motorola smartphones and 10% instant discount on HDFC Bank credit/debit cards.

Unlike the budget segment, Lenovo has very few smartphones in the mid-range segment. Moto Z2 Play (Rs25,999) is the only smartphone in the range that was launched this year. Moto X4 is an attempt to expand the company’s presence and offer Moto fans more options. Unlike the Moto Z series which offers a modular design and the flexibility to snap on accessories to enhance performance, the Moto X4 is a regular smartphone with dual cameras and water proof exterior.

The X4 marks a major design shift for the X series. The matte back finish and the multi-coloured back panels have been replaced with a glass back design which looks more elegant. Though Moto has enforced the side panel with a metal frame, one can’t ignore the fact that glass back makes a smartphone slippery and prone to smudges. The likes of Moto Z2 Play has a metal back.

In terms of size, the Moto X4 is a bit smaller. It is 148.3mm tall and 73.4mm wide whereas the Moto Z2 Play is 156 mm tall and 76.2 mm wide. Despite the small footprint, the Moto X4 weighs 163g, which is more than the Z2 Play’s 145g.

What gives the Moto X4 an edge over the Moto Z2 Play is the water-proof exterior. It comes with IP68 certification and can withstand water up to a depth of 1.5 metres for 30 minutes. The Moto Z2 Play is just splash resistant.

The Moto X4 runs on Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 630 octa-core processor. It is the successor to Snapdragon 626 octa core processor which powers the Moto Z2 Play. There is no major difference between the two. Both are based on 14nm architecture, but the former has a clock speed of 2.2 GHz while the latter clocks at 2GHz. Lenovo has clubbed the Snapdragon 630 with up to 4GB RAM, which is at par with the 4GB RAM you get in Moto Z2 Play.

One of the highlights of the Moto X4 would surely be the dual rear cameras. It packs a 12-megapixel camera for regular shots and an 8-megapixel wide angle camera with 120 degree field of view. The Moto Z2 Play has two 12-megapixel cameras where one camera has a RGB sensor and the other a black and white sensor.

The Moto X4 is targeted at users looking for a small screen option. It has a 5.2-inch screen with resolution of 1,920x1,080p and pixel density of 424ppi. The Moto Z2 Play offers a bigger 5.5-inch display with similar resolution but lower pixel density of 401ppi.

In terms of software, both smartphones have a lot in common. Both run Android 7.1 with the uncluttered stock Android interface.
