Smartphones with that extra cloud storage
Improvement in phone cameras and hardware means users can now shoot images in lossless formats such as RAW and can record 4K videos. Saving those files on the smartphone can fill up the storage pretty soon. Barring Micromax Dual 5 (Rs24,999) and Xiaomi Mi Max Prime (Rs19,999), most smartphones with internal storage of 128GB or higher cost upwards of Rs30,000. A lot of smartphone accept microSD cards too but then spoil things by integrating the microSD card slot with the SIM slots.
There is a third option too in the form of cloud storage. A lot of phonemakers offer them for free these days. Most cloud services charge a premium if you take them separately. For example, Google charges Rs130 per month for 100GB cloud storage on Drive.
One major advantage of cloud storage is that you can access your files on any device and won’t have to transfer them manually every time you switch to a new phone.
Here are some smartphones which offer cloud storage of 100GB or higher.
Asus ZenFone Zoom S
The ZenFone Zoom S is one of the few smartphones which offers 2.3x optical zoom. It can also record 4K videos. The 5.5-inch screen is big enough for watching movies and the Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor paired with 4GB RAM is powerful enough to run games. While the phone has 64GB internal storage, its microSD card is built on one of the SIM trays, which means you cannot use both SIMs simultaneously. This is where the phone’s 100GB cloud storage offering on Drive can come in handy. It runs Android 7.1 (nougat) with the feature-packed Zen UI.
Smartron is another phonemaker that is counting on cloud storage to draw buyers. The phonemaker is giving 32GB internal storage on its latest device, the Srt.Phone, and has a separate slot for microSD card too. What sets it apart from rivals is the unlimited cloud storage for which you don’t have to pay anything extra. The smartphone is powered by a very capable Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 octa-core processor with 4GB RAM. Its key highlight is the plain Android interface. It runs Android 7.1 and is likely to get the Android 8.1 (Oreo) update.
Xiaomi Mi A1
The latest iteration of Google’s Android One smartphone, Xiaomi MI A1 comes with 64GB internal storage. It has a hybrid SIM tray, which means you can’t use the microSD card slot if you have two SIMs installed on the phone. However, with unlimited access to Google Drive for Photos and videos, users have nothing to worry about. The Mi A1 is driven by Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor with 4GB RAM, offers dual camera set up with 2x optical zoom. It runs plain Android (7.1) and is likely to get Oreo update by December.
If there is a smartphone which would benefit from cloud storage, it is the Google Pixel. The 5-inch (1,920x1,080p) screen offering by Google, manufactured by HTC, offers just 32GB internal storage and it doesn’t have a micro card slot. The smartphone offers unlimited storage on Google Drive for high-resolution photos and videos for free. Pixel is a powerful smartphone running on Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line Snapdragon 821quad-core processor with 4GB RAM. It runs Android 7.1 and is going to be the first smartphone to get Android Oreo.
