Apple Music for Android gets new features
Apple has been trying to make its Music app for Android as good as the iOS app. After revamping the interface of the Android app in June, Apple is now adding a slew of new features in it. Some of these features, such as the option to connect with friends, were announced way back in June at the WWDC conference and are available with the new iOS 11. The rest of the features are specific to Android app and are designed to take advantage of the Android ecosystem.
Apple Music is free to download but charges a monthly subscription fee of Rs120 for an individual user and Rs190 for multiple users.
Connect with friends
Apple Music users can now connect with their friends on the Music app itself. They can follow them and see what they are listening to. Users can also share their playlists with them. To ensure users are always up to date with their friends’ playlists, notifications will be sent out when a new song is added.
If you have not noticed this feature yet, go to your app’s menu page. You will see a notification called Set up Sharing right after your profile picture. Follow the instructions to activate it. Then go to your profile by tapping on the profile picture and select Find more friends. This will open a list of your phonebook contacts who are also using Apple Music and those who are already sharing their playlist. You can invite them or follow them and wait for their approval.
The feature is an attempt by Apple to take on rivals such as Spotify, which also allows users to share their playlist with friends.
Supports app shortcut
Apple Music now supports the app shortcut tool available on devices running Android 7.1 or higher. It is similar to the peek and pop feature of iOS and shows up when you tap and hold on the app icon. It shows a bunch of shortcuts in a pop window allowing users to go straight to a specific section of the app without wasting time. So when you press the Music icon next time, you will see the option to open play Beats 1 radio or start a search right away in the shortcuts.
Play your recent tracks quickly
Another feature which makes using the Apple Music easier for Android users is the new widget which shows their recently played tracks right on the home screen. This will speed up things for users as they won’t have to go to the Music app and then look for the playlist again. The widget will show the recent tracks with a single tap.
To add this widget on your smartphone’s home screen, touch and hold anywhere on the home screen. This will open a tab at the bottom with options such as wallpaper, settings and widgets. Go to widgets and look for the widget with multiple boxes.
Control with voice commands
Android users can now access Apple Music using voice commands in Google Assistant and Google search app. They can search for a song, album or artist and then play a track by simply speaking it aloud, like any other voice command in these Google tools.
To take advantage of it, touch and hold the home button or say Ok Google.
