Smartphones without bezels other than Apple iPhone X
The growing popularity of big screens has compelled phonemakers to come up with new ways to incorporate big screens on their phones without blowing away their dimensions. To do so, a lot of them have reduced the size of the bezels around the display on the front panel. Apple too has joined the club with the iPhone X.
Apple is not the first company to do so, but it has tried to take it to the next level. The iPhone X is the first smartphone with practically no bezels, barring a tiny strip on top, to accommodate the front camera and the face ID sensor.
Here are some other big-screen smartphones which have embraced the bezel-less design to accommodate a big screen.
Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+ and Note 8
Rs57,900, Rs64,999, Rs67,900, respectively
Samsung is one of the first to experiment with this new design language. The result was the Galaxy S8 and S8+. The Galaxy S8 offered a 5.8-inch screen, yet weighed just 155g and stood 148.9mm tall. The Galaxy S8+ offered an even bigger 6.2-inch screen, tipped the scales at 173g and was 159mm tall. Then came the Galaxy Note 8 and the screen size got slightly bigger (6.3 inches). It weighs (195g) more than the S8+ as it carries the S-pen. All three screens offer a resolution of 2,960x1,440p, with aspect ratio of 18:9, and have a layer of Gorilla Glass 5. They are powered by Exynos 8895 octa-core processor.
LG G6 and Q6
Rs37,900 and Rs14,990, respectively
LG G6 comes with a 5.7-inch LCD display packed in a 148.9mmx71.9mm metal chassis. There are no side bezels around the display and the upper and lower ones look extremely thin. It offers a resolution of 2,880x1,440p, has an aspect ratio of 18:9 and supports HDR (high dynamic range) content. It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 and has a dedicated Quad DAC for lossless audio experience.
LG Q6 offers the same design language as the G6 at an affordable price. The 5.5-inch LCD screen is slightly smaller but has a resolution of 2,160x1,880p. It weighs just 149g, is 142.5mm long and 69.3mm wide. It is driven by Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 processor.
Micromax Canvas Infinity
Micromax is the first Indian phonemaker to take advantage of the thin bezel concept. Its Canvas Infinity offers a 5.7-inch LCD screen with resolution of 1,440x720p. This plastic body smartphone with removable back weighs 159g, stands 153.5mm tall and 73.1mm wide. It is a budget smartphone driven by Qualcomm’s modest Snapdragon 425 quad-core processor.
Chinese phonemaker Vivo’s latest offering, the V7+, has a 5.9-inch LCD display with narrow bezels. However, for a big screen it packs a pretty modest resolution of just 1,440x720p. It has a plastic body, weighs just 160g and measures 155mmx75.4mm. It runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor.
Xiaomi Mi Mix 2
Chinese yuan 3,299 (Rs32,308) onwards
Xiaomi’s Mi Mix 2 also has a 5.9-inch LCD screen but offers a higher resolution of 2,160x1,080p. Like the iPhone X, it has no bezels on three sides. The smartphone weighs 185g, but is quite compact in size (151.8mmx75.5mm). The Mi Mix is powered by Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line Snapdragon 835 processor.
