Delhi Election 2020: Voting on February 8, counting on 11th

With the announcement of Delhi elections, model code of conduct has come into force with immediate effect

    NEW DELHI : Delhi Assembly elections will be held in single phase on February 8 while results will be announced on February 11, the Election Commission of India said today. The poll watchdog has also published the final electoral list, according to which 1.46 crore voters are eligible to cast their franchise in the Delhi elections.

    The term of the 70-member Delhi Assembly is ending on February 22 and a new House has to be constituted before that. Led by Arvind Kejriwal, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) came to power in Delhi in February 2015 sweeping 67 of the 70 Assembly seats.

    Schedule for single-phase Delhi Assembly elections:

    Notification to be issued on January 14

    Last day of nomination: January 21

    Scrutiny of nominations: January 22

    Last date for withdrawal of candidature: January 24

    Date of Poll: February 8

    Counting of votes: February 11

    LIVE updates of Election Commission press conference:

    -The entire election process will be over by February 13.

    -Despite publication of the final electoral roll (up to January 1, 2020), any eligible person can apply for registration as voter till the last date of nomination of the Delhi assembly election.

    -Delhi voters will be provided QR code-enabled voters slip which will speed up voting through easy identification.

    -CEC Sunil Arora on situation in Delhi: "We are hopeful that situation will be under control and conducive for polls. If there is an extraordinary situation, there is always an option of deferring the polls. Constitution empowers ECI to take the call".

    -Some constituencies in Delhi had lower turnouts last time than Maoists affected areas: Sunil Arora.

    -Chief Electoral Officer Sunil Arora, whose tenure is ending on February 22, said that he held a meeting with Chief Secretary and senior officials last month about holding elections.

    -New concept of absentee voters enables those voters to take part in polls who are not able to come to polling stations due to physical circumstances or unavoidable reasons. Disabled persons and senior citizens above 80 years can either vote in person or vote through postal ballot.

    -Counting of votes on 11th February.

    -Delhi elections to be held in a single phase.

    -Date of poll - 8 February.

    -Scrutiny of nominations: 22 January

    -Last date of nomination: 21st January

    -Model code of conduct shall be applicable with immediate effect: EC

    -A new concept of "absentee voters" has been introduced.

    -Pick and drop facility will be provided for all senior citizen voters

    -About 90,000 officials will be deployed for the conduct of elections: CEC

    -There are 13,750 polling stations in Delhi.

    -Delhi assembly has 58 general category seats, 12 for SC and none for STs: Sunil Arora, chief election commissioner.

    -Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Delhi Ranbir Singh said the final publication of voters list shows there are total 1,46,92,136 voters in Delhi including 80.55 lakh males and 66.35 lakh females.
