According to data from global job site Indeed, there has been a rise of 186% in the number of job seekers for robotics profiles between May 2015 and May 2018
Mumbai: There’s been a 186% spurt in Indians looking for employment in robotics, with Maharashtra offering most of the jobs in the sector, according to a new study by the job site, Indeed.
Maharashtra is followed by Karnataka and Telangana.
The reason: While Maharashtra is home to large technology centres such as Pune and Mumbai, Karnataka has India’s own Silicon Valley, Bengaluru, and Telangana will soon have a technology hub in Hyderabad.
The number of people looking for jobs in robotics soared 186% between May 2015 and May 2018, said the study released on 5 July.
However, following an initial spurt in growth in 2015, driven by the government’s $13 billion investment in robotics under its Make in India initiative, hiring for robotics slowed considerably as the drive lost its momentum, says the study.
Surgery is one area where robotics is making a breakthrough, with the sector expected to grow at a much higher rate of 20% between 2017 and 2025 compared to the global rate of 12%.
India currently has more than 50 robotics firms, including Intuitive Surgical, Accuray, Mazor Robotics, Medrobotics, Synaptive Medical and Titan Medical.
Hospital chains such as Apollo Hospitals, Fortis Healthcare and Max Healthcare use surgical robotics.
Construction is another sector that is seeing an increasing reliance on robots because of government initiatives such as Make in India and Digital India.
With a market of close to 1,000 robots annually, the sector offers huge potential for experimentation, the Indeed study notes.
Other sectors like manufacturing and healthcare are also boosting the demand for robotics talent. For instance, Tata Motors uses robots for production. Many Indian subsidiaries of multinational companies like Samsung, LG, Philips, Honda, Renault, Suzuki, Hyundai and Ford also use industrial robots. Moreover, India has many robotics startups including ASIMOV Robotics, Grey Orange, I2U2 Robot, i2u2--a telepresence robotic companion -- and Sastra Robotics India.
Robotics is a multi-disciplinary field. Good roboticists, among other things, need to understand systems thinking, advanced programming skills, a good grasp of some algebra, calculus and geometry, skills in technology design to isolate the source of problems and propose effective solutions.
According to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), more than 3 million industrial robots will be in use in factories around the world by 2020. Further, according to the initial findings of the World Robotics Report 2018, published by IFR, the automotive industry continues to lead global demand for industrial robots.
In 2017, around 125,500 units were sold in this segment while the strongest growth sectors in 2017 were the metal industry, the electrical/electronics industry and the food industry. In terms of sales volume, notes IFR, Asia has the strongest individual markets: China installed around 138,000 industrial robots in 2017, followed by Japan with around 46,000 units and South Korea with around 40,000 units. In the Americas, the US is the largest single market with around 33,000 industrial robots sold, and in Europe, it is Germany with around 22,000 units sold.
