Dish TV plans to launch HD platform

With high-definition (HD) technology catching the imagination of consumers seeking premium quality video and audio, direct-to-home service provider Dish TV India Ltd plans to launch its HD platform by Diwali this year, the company’s managing director Jawahar Goel said.

Dish TV also plans to introduce the latest Motion Picture Expert Group 4 technology-enabled set top boxes. The firm is holding talks with television channels to produce HD content, Goel said. HD television has greater resolution than traditional television systems. This sharpens the images and enhances sound quality.

Two other DTH players, Tata Sky Ltd and Bharti Telemedia Ltd, are also expected to announce their entry into the domain soon. “We have the HD technology ready with us, but there is no content in India at the moment," Tata Sky chief marketing officer Vikram Mehra said. “We will bring the technology whenever the market is ready for it," he added.

Bharti Telemedia executive director N. Arjun said, “The equipment which we are using is HD-enabled...We will launch the service in standard definition but going forward will bring in HD."
