Harley-Davidson cuts prices of bikes
The firm says it will assemble more bikes locally
Mumbai: The local arm of US motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson Inc. said it will assemble more bikes locally and cut prices on some models.
The announcement on Monday came after finance minister P. Chidambaram proposed raising the import duty on bikes with engines above 800cc to 75% from 60% in the budget on Thursday.
Harley-Davidson is expanding the range of motorcycles it assembles at its factory in Bawal, Haryana, to include the Fat Boy, the Heritage Softail Classic and the Fat Boy Special. The company has been importing these models.
The company also cut the prices of these models. The Fat Boy Special will now be offered at a starting price of ₹ 15.6 lakh in Delhi, down from ₹ 19.7 lakh. The Heritage Softail Classic will cost ₹ 16.25 lakh compared with ₹ 20.45 lakh earlier. The prices don’t include registration and insurance.
Nine out of the 12 models sold in India will now be assembled in the country.
