India’s aviation blues
A new chapter in Indian skies is about to begin: Tata Sons is coming in with two new airlines, Air India is joining the Star Alliance
Low-cost flying came to India in 2003 with Air Deccan, followed by several other budget airlines. This has meant better connectivity, cheaper fares and more flying options for passengers. Some of these airlines have survived the last decade well; others such as Kingfisher Airlines piled up huge debt and shut shop.
Despite that, a new chapter in Indian skies is about to begin—the $100 billion conglomerate Tata Sons is coming in with two new airlines, Air India is joining the prestigious Star Alliance and IndiGo is looking at a possible listing this fiscal year.
