Bengaluru: Cab booking service Uber on Thursday said it was reviewing its India business and would suspend its operations in the national capital until the review is complete.

The company has faced criticism after a driver contracted to it allegedly raped a customer while she was being ferried home on the night of 5 December. The Delhi government’s transport department subsequently banned Uber and similar aggregator services offering taxi bookings via mobile apps.

Uber also said it was improving its business practices on customer safety and driver recruitment policies and would work closely with organizations promoting women’s safety in the country.

“We are assessing all driver screening processes. We are evaluating additional screening options to include background checks on all our driver partners in India above and beyond what is currently required," Uber said in a blog post. “We are conducting a full audit of our verification, rider feedback and support processes. We are implementing measures to ensure that critical rider feedback is escalated immediately and immediate action is taken in every instance. We are also re-reviewing rider feedback on every driver partner across India to make sure nothing has been missed."

The Delhi government has allowed radio taxi cab services such as Meru Cabs and EasyCabs to continue, saying these companies hold valid city licences. Meanwhile, the central government has recommended that all states ban unregistered cab services for the time being.

Despite the recommendation, passengers continued to use Uber, Ola and TaxiForSure in many states. However, after Uber’s decision to suspend its operations in Delhi, people there won’t be able to use the service for now.
