Bengaluru: Online travel agency MakeMyTrip Ltd on Wednesday said it has opened a technology centre in Bengaluru to boost its technology and product verticals.

The Nasdaq-listed company, which has about 400 executives in its technology and product teams in Gurgaon, aims to recruit about 200 executives for the Bengaluru office in the coming months.

Executives at the Bengaluru office will drive developments on customizing the platform to work smoothly on low Internet bandwidth and low-end phones, build platforms for suppliers, new products for consumers as well as strengthen the company’s data science capabilities, said a senior company executive.

“We are trying to do a lot of intelligent stuff and make sure it is worth your time. We are not trying to blindly push you to buy now. We will build our core platforms here with a strong emphasis on mobile," said Anshuman Bapna, chief product officer at MakeMyTrip.

The company will also aggressively expand its hotels and tour package segments, Bapna said.

Online travel agencies have found it hard to attract hotel customers for years. MakeMyTrip claims that it has succeeded in doing so. The firm used to earn about 80% of its revenue from its flights or air business and the remaining from hotels and packages business in 2010-11. In 2015-16, MakeMyTrip earned 50% revenue from hotels and packages and the remaining from air ticket sales, Mint reported on 15 June.

In the quarter ended 30 June 2016, the company’s revenue from air ticketing business stood at $23.9 million as against $19.8 million in the year ago period, while revenue for the hotels and packages segment stood at $95.6 million in the June quarter as against $72.4 million in the year-ago period.

In January, MakeMyTrip, which competes with Cleartrip, Yatra and Ibibo among others, raised $180 million from China’s Ctrip.com International Ltd.
