New Delhi: Maruti Suzuki India Ltd’s domestic sales rose 12.2% to 119,931 units in August compared to the year-ago period, the company said in a statement on Thursday. The sales were led by the compact car models, including Swift, Baleno, Ritz and Dzire, which increased 9.9% over the year-ago period. It was also boosted by the utility vehicle segment that sells the Ertiga and Brezza models. Sales of such models more than doubled to 16,806 units as compared to 7,836 units last year.

Meanwhile, sales of company’s entry-level models such as the Wagon R and Alto remained under pressure, declining 5.8% to 35,490 units. The company’s exports during the month also rose 10.8% to 12,220 units.

“Maruti sales are marginally below our estimate as the company continues to face production constraint. While we believe Maruti is the best placed to play domestic demand pick-up, production constraints and peak valuations mean we have a Neutral rating on the stock," said Nitesh Sharma, analyst at Phillip Capital India in a note.

At 10.38am, Maruti Suzuki India rose 0.05% to 5,055 on the BSE, while India’s benchmark Sensex index rose 0.04% to 28,463.42 points.
