GVK group wins court battle over coal mine in Australia

An Australian court dismisses an appeal against Queensland's environmental approval for India's GVK Group to build a coal mine in the country

Mumbai: An Australian court on Friday dismissed an appeal against Queensland’s environmental approval for India’s GVK Group to build a coal mine in the country.

The order comes almost a month after the federal court of Australia overturned environment permission for Adani group’s $12-billion Carmichael coal mining project in Queensland, saying environment minister Greg Hunt had “ignored his own department’s advice about the mine’s impact on two vulnerable species, the yakka skink and the ornamental snake (seen mostly in Queensland)".

A Queensland court has handed victory to billionaire Gina Rinehart in her battle to establish a new coal mine, The Sydney Morning Herald reported on Friday.

“Lobby group Coast and County, on behalf of three farmers, had challenged GVK plans to build the Galilee Basin mine after the former environment minister approved them last year," the newspaper report said.

Georgina Hope “Gina" Rinehart is chairman of Hancock Prospecting, a privately-owned mineral exploration and extraction firm. GVK Hancock, a joint venture of GVK Group and Australia’s leading resource company Hancock Prospecting, is building a mine in Australia.

GVK Group has acquired Australian coal mines in Queensland with reserves of 8 billion tonnes for $1.26 billion and envisages an investment of $10 billion for setting up mines, a 500km rail project and a 60 million tonnes per annum port project, which will form one of the world’s largest integrated coal mining operations.

“No comments," Sanjay Reddy, vice-chairman and managing director at GVK Group, said in response to a text message.

The environmental defenders’ office ran a challenge to the former state government’s approval of the Alpha mine, arguing it should be refused outright because of its impact on groundwater and climate change through carbon emissions, The Guardian reported on Friday.

“Then environment minister Andrew Powell gave the mine an environmental authority five months after that ruling, subject to underground water monitoring. The land court ruled that climate change impacts of the mine through coal burned overseas was outside the jurisdiction of state environmental laws," the report said.

On 28 May, GVK Hancock said it had developed a plan to boost regional jobs for 30-plus years in the operational workforce of its planned Galilee Basin mining operations.
