CSC expects India biz to grow 10-15% in next three years

Mumbai: Computer Sciences Corp. (CSC), the $16.2 billion New York-listed technology-enabled business solutions and services provider, expects its operations in the country to mirror the 10-15% growth rate of its global applications business over the next three years.

“India is a large delivery centre, we’ve started a small domestic presence and at this time (we’re) just dipping our toes, knowing that we are late in the marketplace," said Vivek Chopra, president of global applications for CSC. “But we’re still wanting to go after the market in specific areas we believe we can make a difference and provide value to the customer."

CSC, which began operations in India in 1991, now has 18 delivery centres spread across seven cities—Noida, Indore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore and Vadodara.

Of the 23,000 employees in India, about 5,000 work on infrastructure, 3,000 on intellectual property while the remaining 15,000 work on applications. Operations to address the Indian market have only begun recently.

“We looked at a couple of areas we want to work in. So in six-nine months, we’ll know the headway we’re making and then start etching our strategy a little more deeply," he said.

Growth has slowed but hasn’t stopped, said Chopra, adding that CSC is looking at Germany and France from an applications perspective.

The firm operates in three areas—applications, infrastructure and non-voice business process outsourcing—which support six lines of business, including health services, public sector, chemical, energy and natural resources, financial services, manufacturing and technology and consumer.

The applications business, which contributes about one-fourth of the revenue, is likely to be driven mainly by the advent of the cloud, said Chopra, adding that there were four clear trends driving businesses around information technology—mobility, big data (flood of information from numerous sources), the cloud and consumerization of IT.
