Sony’s tablet computer to hit Japanese market on 17 Sep

Tokyo: Sony Corporation will release its first tablet computer on 17 September in Japan with the aim of becoming the leader in Android-based tablets and chasing Apple Inc, maker of the popular iPad, in the broader tablet market. The decision was announced yesterday.

The price for the wi-fi capable Sony Tablet ‘S’ series with a 9.4-inch display on the Android 3.1 platform is expected to be around ¥45,000 ($583) for a model with a 16-gigabyte data storage and ¥53,000 ($687) for the 32-gigabyte version, according to the Japanese electronics giant.

Sony also said it plans to roll out in October or November the wi-fi tablet’s ‘P’ series which is also capable of 3G mobile data connection via carrier NTT Docomo Inc, to pursue Apple’s iPad which is exclusively sold by Softbank Mobile Corp.

Users of the tablet computer can access content distributed by Sony such as movies, music, games and books, while the foldable S series - with 5.5-inch displays - can work as a remote controller for appliances such as televisions, Sony said.

The Sony Tablet S series will hit the European market at the end of September with a price tag of €479 ($684) for the 16-gigabyte model. The P series will be launched in November, the company said.

In the United States, the Sony Tablet S series will hit store shelves in September with the price set at about $499 for the 16-gigabyte model, it said.
