SAIL plans to develop area around Salem unit into SEZ

New Delhi: State-run Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) is planning to develop areas adjoining its Salem plant as steel sector Special Economic Zone.
In written reply to a query in the Lok Sabha today, Minister of State for Steel Akhilesh Das said SAIL will play the anchor role by providing customised steel input to the prospective units in sectors like cutlery, kitchenwar, chemical and pharmaceutical units.
In reply to another query Das said Maharashtra Elektrosmelt Ltd has sought waiver of ₹ 57 crore demanded by the state for transferring its land to SAIL.
