IBM introduces computing courses at four institutes to groom future professionals
The four institutions are IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Bombay, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata and BITS Pilani
New Delhi: International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) on Wednesday said the company will introduce courses in so-called cognitive computing at four premier Indian education institutions in order to groom professionals who can work with the technology giant’s Watson supercomputer.
The four institutions are Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kharagpur, IIT-Bombay, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata and the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani.
Cognitive computing, a recent technological development, uses context and insights to find solutions to complex problems which cannot be addressed by traditional computing.
“The cognitive computing course will empower India’s university students to build applications infused with Watson’s intelligence," IBM said.
The initiative is part of the company’s larger strategy to skill students and raise their understanding of Big Data and analytics to meet the growing demand for highly skilled workforce.
In January, IBM made a billion-dollar investment to create and develop the ecosystem for using Watson’s cognitive skills.
“Watson is at the forefront of a new era of computing, fueling a new market and ecosystem of clients, partners, developers, venture capitalists, universities and students. IBM India’s partnership with the universities represents another milestone in IBM’s global advancement of Watson", said Vani Singh, India leader, IBM Watson Group. “We aim to help participating universities succeed in their vision to turn today’s students into tomorrow’s cognitive computing leaders."
The course will help students gain technical knowledge and hands-on expertise in fields such as natural language processing, machine learning and content lifecycle management that is required to develop new cognitive computing applications.
Enrolled students will form a business team and gain access through the Watson Developer Cloud, IBM said.
