Motorola Mobility shuts down Chennai centre, lets 76 go
The announcement will not have any impact on Motorola’s other operations in India, says firm’s spokesperson
Bangalore: Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc., which was acquired by Google Inc. last year, is closing its Chennai facility that employs 76 people in the order processing function, a company official confirmed on Wednesday.
The unit, acquired by Google in May 2011 for $12.5 billion, announced plans to cut about 4,000 jobs in August and close one-third of its 90 facilities.
Closing the Chennai facility is part of a global transformation being carried by Motorola Mobility that will shift the function of order processing to factories, away from remote staff who managed product shipments, said William Moss, a spokesperson for Motorola Mobility.
“We are working to provide relief packages and outplacement. It was a difficult decision and not something we were eager to do," Moss said over phone.
Google acquired Motorola Mobility for some 17,000 patents and mobile Android software.
This announcement will not have any impact on Motorola’s other operations in India, the spokesperson added.
“We will continue to maintain our R&D (research and development) and other corporate functions," Moss said.
Motorola Mobility has started informing its Chennai staff about the decision. The job cuts are effective from February.
