Coal India challenges JSPL’s waste disposal at Chattisgarh mines
Coal India moved Delhi high court against Jindal Steel and Power for dumping waste generated from its power plants into Gare Palma IV/1 mine

New Delhi: Coal India Ltd (CIL) on Friday moved the Delhi high court against Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) for dumping waste generated from its power plants into the Gare Palma IV/1 mine in Chhattisgarh. CIL is the present custodian of the mine.
“Let us not have parallel litigations in this matter," said a bench comprising chief justice G. Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath, while directing Coal India to file an application before the appropriate court of Justice Rajiv Shakder before whom the earlier order was passed.
The counsel of CIL, Sandeep Sethi, challenged an earlier order dated 13 April by virtue of which the court had allowed Jindal Steel to dump waste into the Gare Palma IV/1 mine in Chhattisgarh.
Sethi prayed for modification of the earlier order as Jindal dumping its waste was causing a nuisance and the company did not have the requisite environmental clearances.
