Mumbai: Maruti Suzuki India Ltd’s domestic sales rose 10.6% to 113,162 in May, the company said in a statement on Wednesday. The sales were led by an 11% growth in the compact car models, including the Swift, Celerio, Baleno and Dzire. Sales of such models advanced to 46,554 units against 41,926 units a year ago.
Meanwhile, reflecting a changing preference for costlier and feature-rich models, demand for entry-level models such as the Wagon R and Alto slipped 5.6% to 33,105 units over the last year.
Driven by the compact SUV model, Vitara Brezza, the utility vehicle sales at the market leader jumped to 13,596 units from 5,567 units a year ago. Sales of the super compact model, Dzire Tour, dropped 19.9% to 2,555 units over last year.
Overseas shipments at the local arm of the Japanese car maker remained depressed. Exports during the month dropped 20.8% to 9,872 units compared to last year.
Backed by new models and an improvement in sentiments, car sales in India have been rising on a healthy clip. Car sales in April grew 18% from a year ago, the fastest in nearly three years, to 159,548 units. India’s economy advanced to 7.9% in the March quarter from 7.2% in the December quarter.
